Understanding Fitzpatrick Skin Types: A Simple Guide to Your Skin Tone & Sun Behaviour 🌞

Have you ever wondered why some people tan beautifully while others burn red in just 15 minutes? Or why Indian skin is more prone to dark spots after a pimple compared to fairer skin?

The answer lies in something called the Fitzpatrick Skin Type — a simple yet powerful system created by dermatologist Dr. Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in 1975. It helps us understand how different skin tones react to the sun.

At Unspoiled, we believe understanding your Fitzpatrick skin type is the first step to choosing skincare that truly works for you — especially in India’s intense sun and humid climate.

What is the Fitzpatrick Scale?

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies human skin into 6 types (I to VI) based on two main things:

  • Your natural skin colour
  • How your skin reacts when exposed to the sun (does it burn or tan?)

It’s not just about how “fair” or “dark” you look — it’s about your skin’s natural protection and sensitivity.

The 6 Fitzpatrick Skin Types – Explained Simply

Type I – Snow White

  • Very pale/white skin, often with freckles, red or blonde hair
  • Always burns, never tans
  • Highest risk of sun damage

Type II – Fair Skin

  • Fair skin, light eyes and hair
  • Burns easily, tans very little
  • Still quite sun-sensitive

Type III – Light to Medium

  • Light beige or olive tone
  • Sometimes burns, tans gradually to light brown
  • Common in many parts of North India and some South Asians

Type IV – Moderate Brown / Olive

  • Light to moderate brown skin
  • Burns minimally, tans easily to a deeper brown
  • Very common among Indians, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern skin

Type V – Dark Brown

  • Brown to deep brown skin
  • Rarely burns, tans deeply and easily
  • One of the most common skin types in India

Type VI – Deeply Pigmented

  • Very dark brown to black skin
  • Never burns, always tans darkly
  • Offers strong natural sun protection but still needs care

Most Indians fall into Type III, IV, and V — with Type IV and V being the most common.

Why Does This Matter for Indian Skin?

Skin types III to VI have more melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour). This is great because it gives natural protection against UV rays. However, these skin types are more likely to develop:

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (dark marks after acne, injury, or inflammation)
  • Melasma
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Excessive tanning in summer

That’s why strong, harsh skincare products that work on fair skin can sometimes cause more harm than good on Indian skin.

How Unspoiled Designs for Your Skin Type

We formulate every product keeping Fitzpatrick Types III–VI in mind. That’s why we use gentle but effective percentages like:

  • 0.5% Azelaic Acid + 0.5% Salicylic Acid in our Clear & Breakout Control Face Sheet Mask
  • 8% Niacinamide + 2% Azelaic Acid in our daily serum

These ingredients fight acne, calm inflammation, control oil, and fade dark spots without irritating or damaging your skin barrier — which is especially important for medium to deep skin tones in India’s humid, polluted climate.

Quick Way to Find Your Fitzpatrick Skin Type

Answer these questions honestly:

  1. What is your natural skin colour on the inside of your arm?
  2. When you stay in the sun for 30–45 minutes without sunscreen, do you burn or tan?
  3. Do you develop dark spots easily after pimples or insect bites?

If you rarely burn and tan easily with medium to deep skin tone → You are likely Type IV or V.

Final Thought

Knowing your Fitzpatrick skin type helps you protect your skin better, choose the right products, and avoid unnecessary damage. Beautiful, healthy skin isn’t about becoming fairer — it’s about respecting and caring for the skin tone you have.

At Unspoiled, we create skincare that celebrates skin in all its shades.
